Tell Governor Newsom to Double Down on Climate Investment

Subject: Doubling the climate investment in the state budget

Message:

I commend Governor Newsom for initially proposing $37.6 billion in climate investments over the next five years, and am grateful he has proposed an additional $9.5 billion in the May Revise. Yet while historic, this climate investment is nonetheless inadequate. It’s not enough to stop wildfires, transition to a clean energy economy, and avoid burdening our kids with an irreversible climate catastrophe. Saving California requires a budget with many unprecedented actions. The level of investment on climate must be at least 5% of the state’s annual spending to match the scale of the climate crisis and the significance of its impacts on the people of California, our environment, and our economy. I am asking Governor Newsom to double down on climate by investing $75 billion over the next five years. Doubling the climate investment is the only appropriate response to the climate catastrophe, petro-dictatorship, and the increased economic uncertainty for millions of people in a world still wrestling with war and COVID. Increasing climate investment to 5% of the state budget would allow for additional spending toward: - Clean transportation, including electrified transit and zero-emissions vehicles - Clean energy, including solar-storage batteries on a million homes - Green buildings and building decarbonization, including heat pumps and efficiency upgrades - Clean water, including water recycling and drought-proofing our water system - Wildfire prevention, suppression, and resilience - Nature-based climate solutions, including support for Tribal conservation initiatives, biodiversity conservation, and coastal protection and resilience - Racial justice and democracy - Workforce transition and job training and development in the green economy With these investments, California would regain its world leadership on climate and expand its leadership on civic participation, humane and just immigration policy, rights and safety in the workplace, and racial justice — all integral parts of a climate just future. Governor Newsom talks a lot about “the California Way.” The California Way has always combined innovation, tolerance, and ambition. The California Way is to dream big and build bigger. The climate crisis is a big problem that requires big solutions. Fortunately, we have the solutions, we just need politicians to have the will to do what is required to solve the crisis. California has a massive $97.5 billion surplus, with $49.2 billion in discretionary spending. It's time for California to put its wealth to work for climate infrastructure. Budgets are moral documents. They are where we say what it is we care about. This is work that must be done, and I’m counting on Governor Newsom to show that the California government cares enough to take the bold action necessary to solve the climate crisis. This is an opportunity for Governor Newsom to be a hero and make California a global leader on climate. Thank you.
